Week 5 Fantasy Football Injury Updates: Who’s In, Who’s Out & Who to Start

SHARE

Sunday morning: the sacred weekly ritual of checking injury reports, second-guessing your flex, and wondering whether the guy you picked up off waivers is about to score 27 points while your first-round pick takes a dump on the field.

Week 5 has delivered some serious lineup news. Several major contributors are officially out, a few stars have been cleared to play, and at least one offense will have to operate without its starting quarterback.

Let’s separate the real lineup emergencies from the usual Sunday-morning panic.

Lamar Jackson is OUT. Tyler Huntley gets the start.

Baltimore will be without Lamar Jackson against Atlanta on Sunday night. Tyler Huntley is expected to start at quarterback.

This is a major fantasy downgrade because Jackson’s value comes from more than passing yards and touchdowns. His rushing ability creates a weekly advantage that a backup quarterback generally cannot replicate.

Fantasy fallout:

  • Huntley is a desperation replacement in most standard fantasy leagues.
  • Baltimore’s receivers take a quarterback-related downgrade.
  • The Ravens’ running backs could see more work, but don’t assume Jackson’s designed runs simply transfer to another player.

PigSkinFantasy call: If Jackson is your starter, make another plan. Don’t start Huntley just because he’s wearing the same uniform.

THE GOOD NEWS: THESE STARS ARE ACTIVE

Justin Jefferson is ACTIVE; Jordan Addison is OUT

Minnesota gets Justin Jefferson back in the lineup against New Orleans, while Jordan Addison is inactive with a hamstring injury.

Jefferson’s ankle had made him a pregame concern, but he’s officially active. Addison’s absence could concentrate more targets among Jefferson and the Vikings’ other available pass catchers.

PigSkinFantasy call: Jefferson is in play as your usual high-end starter. Addison goes to the bench. If Jefferson is on your roster, don’t let yesterday’s anxiety override today’s confirmed status.

Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are both ACTIVE

Cincinnati’s passing game gets a major boost against Miami. Ja’Marr Chase has cleared concussion protocol and is active, while Tee Higgins is also active despite his groin and neck concerns.

There are concerns, however, that Higgins will be on a snap count.

Having both receivers available gives Joe Burrow his regular top receiving options and gives fantasy managers a reason to exhale.

PigSkinFantasy call: Obviously, start Chase as planned. If you are risk-adverse and have other solid options, you may want to sit Higgins.

Terry McLaurin is ACTIVE

Washington receiver Terry McLaurin is active against the Giants after dealing with a hamstring injury. Quarterback Jayden Daniels is also active despite his elbow concern.

That is a significant boost for Washington’s offense compared with the possibility of losing either player.

McLaurin will also be on a snap count. And he’s playing in some wet and sloppy conditions (88% chance of rain).

PigSkinFantasy call: McLaurin is back in play if you are desperate. If you were waiting for confirmation before locking him in, you have it. Keep in mind a limited snap count and adverse weather conditions do not make him a favored start.

Keenan Allen is ACTIVE

Indianapolis receiver Keenan Allen is active against Pittsburgh after appearing on the injury report with a groin issue.

Allen’s availability gives the Colts another experienced target option and reduces the need to speculate about a last-minute replacement.

PigSkinFantasy call: Allen is available for your lineup if he was already a viable starter. Don’t elevate him above a stronger option just because he made it through the injury report.

Alvin Kamara is ACTIVE

New Orleans running back Alvin Kamara is active against Minnesota after being listed with a back injury. His receiving role can help protect his fantasy value even if the Saints struggle to get the ground game going.

PigSkinFantasy call: Kamara remains in consideration as a regular starter. The injury concern is no longer an inactive-list emergency, though his exact workload remains a separate question.

Ashton Jeanty is ACTIVE

Las Vegas running back Ashton Jeanty is active against New England despite his ankle issue.

That’s welcome news for fantasy managers, but it doesn’t prove he’s at 100 percent. If you have another comparable, healthy option, consider the risk before making the final call.

PigSkinFantasy call: Jeanty is available to start. Don’t mistake “active” for “guaranteed to handle his usual workload.”

THE RUNNING BACKS YOU NEED TO REPLACE

Rico Dowdle is OUT

Pittsburgh running back Rico Dowdle is inactive with a toe injury against Indianapolis.

This gives Jaylon Warren another green light.

PigSkinFantasy call: Remove Dowdle from your lineup. Start Warren with confidence.

Kyle Monangai is OUT

Chicago running back Kyle Monangai is inactive against Green Bay.

His absence removes one option from the Bears’ backfield, putting more on the plate of D’Andre Swift.

PigSkinFantasy call: Start Swift with confidence.

LADD McCONKEY: PLAN FOR AN ABSENCE

Chargers receiver Ladd McConkey is not expected to play against Denver because of a foot injury.

If you have McConkey in your lineup, don’t leave your decision until the last second. Prepare a replacement before the Chargers kick off.

Fantasy fallout: The remaining Chargers receivers could see more opportunities, but the distribution is not guaranteed to be clean. A player gaining targets can still be a risky start if his role is inconsistent.

PigSkinFantasy call: Make a backup plan now. A healthy, slightly less exciting starter beats a zero in the lineup.

MONDAY NIGHT: THE BILLS AND RAMS STILL MATTER

Buffalo visits the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night, so some fantasy decisions remain open after Sunday’s games.

The most important update is DJ Moore, who is questionable with a shoulder injury. Buffalo receiver Josh Palmer is out, while Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver is also out. Rams safety Quentin Lake is questionable with a hip injury.

Fantasy fallout:

  • If you plan to start Moore, keep a viable alternative ready.
  • Palmer’s absence may change the Bills’ receiver rotation, but don’t assume one player inherits every available target.
  • Oliver’s absence is relevant for IDP managers and for evaluating the Rams’ offensive matchup.

PigSkinFantasy call: Don’t leave an uncertain Monday-night player in your lineup without a backup option. Your bench is there for a reason—other than collecting dust and making you feel guilty.

THE FINAL WORD

Week 5 has already taken a bite out of several fantasy lineups. Philadelphia is short-handed, Baltimore loses its most dynamic offensive player, Minnesota gets Jefferson back but loses Addison, and Cincinnati has both Chase and Higgins available.

The lesson is simple: react to confirmed news, not rumors—and don’t confuse opportunity with guaranteed production.

Check the inactives. Check the depth chart. Check your bench.

Then set your lineup and accept the one certainty of fantasy football: no matter how carefully you prepare, somebody on your bench will score more than the guy you started.

That’s the pigskin life.
