The Final Whistle Before Kickoff: Sunday’s Fantasy Football News
It’s Sunday morning. The coffee is hot, the lineup screen is open, and somewhere in America a fantasy manager is staring at a player listed as “questionable” and wondering whether that word means probably playing or the jokes on you.
With the first Week 3 kickoffs just hours away, we’re getting the information that matters.
Here is the final fantasy football news you need before locking in your lineup.
NICO COLLINS IS OUT — AGAIN
The Texans will once again be without Nico Collins, who remains sidelined by his hamstring injury.
Collins is officially inactive against Indianapolis, making this his second consecutive missed game. The latest reports indicate there is a decent chance he could return next week against Dallas.
For now, though, Houston’s passing game has to operate without its WR1.
That puts Xavier Hutchinson, Jaylin Noel and Kayshon Boutte back on the fantasy radar, although none should be treated as an automatic Collins replacement.
PigSkinFantasy advice: Opportunity is not the same thing as production. Start the Houston receiver you believe has the best combination of targets and talent — not simply the guy who happens to be wearing the same uniform.
SAM DARNOLD IS BACK
There is good news on the other side of that Seattle-Washington matchup.
Sam Darnold is back and ready to start after missing time with a glute injury. That’s significant for the Seahawks’ fantasy offense.
Darnold’s return gives Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp and Denzel Boston a more familiar quarterback situation than they had during his absence.
It also makes the Seattle passing game considerably easier to trust.
Darnold’s return is particularly important for JSN managers.
Nobody wants to watch their WR1 spend four quarters catching passes from a quarterback who looks like he was pulled from the stadium parking lot.
BROCK BOWERS IS EXPECTED TO PLAY
This might be the biggest tight-end news of the morning.
Brock Bowers is expected to make his 2026 debut against New Orleans after missing the first two games with a knee injury.
There is obviously some risk. Bowers hasn’t played a regular-season snap yet, and the Raiders could be cautious with his workload.
But if you drafted Bowers as your TE1, this is not the morning to get adorable.
If Bowers is active, he’s in most lineups.
Just make sure you have a backup plan before the Raiders announce their inactive list.
ZAY FLOWERS: THIS ONE IS ACTUALLY A GAME-TIME DECISION
The Ravens aren’t giving fantasy managers the luxury of an easy answer.
Zay Flowers is questionable with a hamstring injury and is expected to work out before the game.
The latest report says Flowers will push to play, but Baltimore isn’t counting on him being available Translation:
Do not put Flowers into your lineup and walk away from your computer.
The Ravens play Dallas at 4:25 p.m. ET, meaning fantasy managers will have plenty of early games already underway before Flowers’ status is known.
If you have Flowers, identify your backup now. If Flowers sits, Rashod Bateman gets a significant fantasy bump, while Mark Andrews becomes even more attractive.
MIKE EVANS PLANS TO PLAY
The 49ers are expected to have Mike Evans against Arizona. Evans is dealing with a hip issue, but the latest report says he plans to play. That’s good news for San Francisco and fantasy managers.
Evans has already shown enough early-season involvement to remain a legitimate starting option when active. The bigger question is whether his hip limits his snaps or routes. For now, however, there is no reason to panic.
Evans is in the lineup.
JAYLEN WARREN IS EXPECTED TO PLAY
Pittsburgh running back Jaylen Warren is active against Cincinnati despite his shoulder injury.
That’s important because the Rico Dowdle is out. Warren should get the majority of the touches.
If you were hoping for a giant workload for the next guy up, the fantasy gods have apparently decided that you don’t get nice things.
MICHAEL PITTMAN IS EXPECTED TO RETURN
After missing Week 2, Michael Pittman Jr. is expected to return for Pittsburgh against Cincinnati despite his foot injury.
Pittman dealt with plantar fasciitis during the week but is expected to play. That doesn’t make him an automatic fantasy start. It does, however, change the outlook for the Steelers passing game.
If you were considering one of Pittsburgh’s secondary receivers because Pittman was expected to miss, reconsider.
DJ MOORE IS EXPECTED TO PLAY
Buffalo receiver DJ Moore is expected to play against the Chargers despite his shoulder injury.
Moore missed most of Week 2 after suffering the injury, so fantasy managers should keep expectations reasonable.
But active is active. If Moore is one of your normal starters, this is not the sort of situation where you need to get cute five minutes before kickoff.
KEON COLEMAN IS ACTIVE
While Moore was the bigger question mark, Keon Coleman is also available for Buffalo. That matters because the Bills’ receiver rotation can get complicated quickly when everyone is healthy.
If you were considering Coleman as a desperation play because of Moore’s injury, the latest news removes some of the potential target bump.
A FEW MORE PLAYERS YOU CAN TAKE OUT OF YOUR LINEUP
The official inactive reports provide some clarity for several early games.
Among the fantasy-relevant names ruled out:
- Adonai Mitchell — Jets: OUT
- Mason Taylor — Jets: OUT
- DJ Giddens — Colts: OUT
- Rico Dowdle — Steelers: OUT
- Chig Okonkwo — Commanders: OUT
- Xavier Legette — Panthers: OUT
That means it’s time to stop staring at the word “questionable” next to these players and move on.
They’re not playing.
DON’T FORGET ABOUT SUNDAY NIGHT
Here’s the lineup trap that could get you later.
Puka Nacua is doubtful for Sunday night’s Rams-Broncos game because of his hip/groin injury. At this point, fantasy managers should be planning as though Puka isn’t playing.
That makes Davante Adams an even more important part of the Rams passing game, while Terrance Ferguson gets another opportunity to remain heavily involved.
If you have Nacua in your lineup, don’t wait until 7:59 p.m. to figure out your alternative. Your bench should already have a Plan B.
AND MONDAY NIGHT HAS ITS OWN PROBLEM
If you’re in a league that allows you to use Monday-night players, remember that Caleb Williams is out for Chicago’s Monday night game against Philadelphia.
That means Tyson Bagent gets the start if he clears concussion protocol.
If not, you get Case Keenum.
If you have Bears receivers or are playing superflex, make sure you’re accounting for the quarterback change before locking your lineup.
THE PIGSKINFANTASY SUNDAY MORNING CHECKLIST
Before you hit Submit Lineup, take 60 seconds and do this:
1. Check your questionable players.
Don’t assume “questionable” means “playing.”
2. Check the inactive list.
The NFL’s official inactive reports are being released roughly 90 minutes before kickoff.
3. Have a backup for every late-game player.
Especially Zay Flowers and Puka Nacua.
4. Don’t confuse opportunity with talent.
An injured star’s replacement might get more snaps without suddenly becoming a fantasy superstar.
5. Check your quarterback.
Nothing destroys a fantasy lineup faster than discovering your WR1 is catching passes from the guy you didn’t know was starting.
6. Stop tinkering.
At some point, you have to trust the roster you built.
🐷 THE FINAL WORD
Week 3 has already delivered enough quarterback injuries, hamstring problems, questionable wide receivers and questionable decisions to fill an entire fantasy hospital.
But that’s why Sunday morning matters.
Nico Collins is out.
Jayden Daniels is out.
Sam Darnold is back.
Brock Bowers is expected to return.
Mike Evans is expected to play.
Jaylen Warren is expected to play.
Michael Pittman is expected to play.
And Zay Flowers remains the big late-afternoon question mark.
Check your lineup. Check your bench. Check the inactive reports.
Then walk away from the computer before you convince yourself that starting your third-string running back because of a tweet from some guy named “FantasyTruth69” is a good idea.
The final whistle before kickoff is approaching.
Make sure your fantasy lineup is ready for it.
